About Us
Ayurveda is the oldest traditional system of medicine, originated in the Indian subcontinent. The root of Ayurveda dates back to Vedic period, about 5000 years ago. The main source of knowledge for Ayurveda was derived from Vedas; it is upaveda of Atharva veda. In Charak Samhita, the pre historic document of Ayurveda it is mentioned that the first international Ayurveda congress was held on the lap of Himalayas in the presence of fifty two eminent scholars, rishis and experts. They performed meditation, afterwards discussing, developing and documenting Ayurveda. Therefore the Himalaya region receives recognition and praise for its highest knowledge, aspiration, purity and harmony of life. This region is the source of many highly valued medicinal plants.
Ayurveda is the popular traditional medicine system of Nepal. Traditional medicine system in Nepal has strong cultural and religious background. It exists in different ways such as ethnic or tribal group, ritual or ceremonial practices, spiritual practices, diet or self-healing practices. Indigenous and local communities have been using traditional and indigenous knowledge for centuries under local laws, customs and traditions. Traditional healers are the major contributors in health services in Nepal. People have belief on their knowledge and faith on their formulations. During Lichchhavi period (1st – 9th century A.D) Ayurveda was a major part of the traditional health system. Many arogyashalas were established which has important role in public health services. Ayurveda practice became more institutionalized with the formal education program started by Chandra Shumsher in 1928 and the establishment of the Singha Durbar Vaidhyakhana (ayurvedic pharmaceutical) in the 17th century. Now Ayurveda is considered as a main stream medical system with network of ayurvedic centers and colleges with in the country.
Mahankal Ayurveda Treatment Center (MATC) is established on 2005 by a young energetic ayurvedic doctor. In the initial time it was a tiny ayurvedic medicine shop with a small examination room in the back. Twenty years back there were few ayurvedic centers in the town. Though people were using ayurvedic medicine, it was not institutionalized. People used to go to Naradevi Ayurveda Hospital in Kathmandu for the ayurvedic medicine and treatment which was famous for jaundice treatment. We could hardly found ayurvedic clinic in outskirts of Kathmandu. Dr Laxmi Prasad Ghimire, founder of this clinic believed that Ayurveda is the best treatment method for our communities. At that time with support and guidance from his father Mr Mukunda Prasad Ghimire MATC was established in Balaju, the northern border of Kathmandu. The goal of the center was to serve authentic ayurvedic treatment to local people. Despite many challenges, we continue our services to local people. We expand our services including ayurvedic doctor consultation, pathology lab and therapies.
During this period, we have become more sophisticated and excellent by adding to our services. We are now striving to provide an excellent service in the current situation with separate consultation rooms, expanded pharmacy, pathology lab, surgery room, Ayurvedic therapy and physiotherapy services. More than one lakh people from home and abroad have benefited from our center. In the 20 years since its establishment, we have gained knowledge about many diseases, medicines, and treatments while providing healthcare services to people. The learning of this period has made us the best among the limited Ayurveda healthcare service providers today.
